This is not surprising to see since it is widely known that movement of air in the atmosphere is driven by horizontal pressure gradients (constant elevation) surface and pressure along vertical surfaces do not cause winds. In conclusion, you are more likely see distinct wind speed patterns if the comparison was by longitudinal ranges (as opposed to latitudinal).
